Creating homemade rose water is a simple and enjoyable process. Rose water has various uses, including skincare, haircare, and even as a refreshing facial mist. Here’s a basic recipe for DIY homemade rose water:
Ingredients:
  • Fresh rose petals (about 2 cups)
  • Distilled water (enough to cover the rose petals)
  • Ice cubes (optional)
Equipment:
  • Large pot with a lid
  • Heat-resistant bowl
  • Cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer
  • Glass bottle or jar with a tight-fitting lid for storage

Instructions:

  • Selecting Roses: Choose fresh, pesticide-free roses. Ideally, they should be grown without the use of chemicals. Make sure the roses haven’t been sprayed with pesticides.
  • Washing Roses: Gently rinse the rose petals under cold running water to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Removing Petals: Separate the petals from the roses, discarding the white portion at the base of each petal as it can be bitter.
  • Boiling Water: In a large pot, bring enough distilled water to cover the rose petals to a gentle boil. Once it boils, reduce the heat to a simmer.
  • Adding Rose Petals: Place the rose petals into the simmering water. Cover the pot with a lid and let it simmer until the petals lose their color.
  • Collecting Steam: Set a heat-resistant bowl in the center of the pot, directly above the rose petals. Make sure the bowl is stable and won’t tip over. Place the lid upside down on the pot.
  • Condensation: As the water boils, the steam will rise, hit the lid, and then condense, dripping down into the bowl. This is your rose water. Adjust the heat to maintain a gentle simmer.
  • Collecting Rose Water: Let the process continue until you collect a sufficient amount of rose water in the bowl. This may take about 20-30 minutes.
  • Straining: Carefully lift the bowl from the pot. The water in the bowl is your rose water. Strain it through cheesecloth or a fine mesh strainer into a clean glass bottle or jar.
  • Cooling: Let the rose water cool completely. You can add a couple of ice cubes to speed up the cooling process.
  • Storage: Once cooled, store the rose water in the refrigerator. It’s best to use it within a week or two.
  • Usage: You can use your homemade rose water as a facial toner, a refreshing spray for your face, or as an ingredient in DIY skincare and haircare recipes. Make sure to do a patch test before using it extensively to ensure you don’t have any allergies or sensitivities.
